Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, stated in an interview that the United States and Russia are on the brink of direct military conflict. Lavrov assured that the Biden administration has brought the enmity between the two countries to a critical point.
During the interview conducted after the BRICS summit in Kazan, which Turkey also attended, Lavrov mentioned that he has no preferences between the U.S. presidential candidates, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. He stated that, regardless of the winner, he does not foresee a change in American Russophobia.
The minister highlighted Russia's willingness to engage in dialogue, as long as it is based on mutual respect and the interests of both nations. Lavrov expressed that Russia is open to a political solution in Ukraine, but emphasized that this solution must go beyond a temporary ceasefire.
Lavrov detailed that the eastward expansion of NATO, threats to Russia's security, and the violation of the rights of Russians and Russian speakers in Ukraine are fundamental aspects to consider in resolving the conflict. Currently, tensions between the countries continue to rise.
The minister lamented that Washington and its allies support Kiev and are considering supplying long-range Western missiles to target objectives within Russia. In light of this situation, Lavrov concluded that the chances of successful mediation, even by Turkey, seem unlikely.
