Man Sentenced to Prison for Cutting Off Family's Gas

A court in Turkey's Kayseri province sentenced a man to prison for cutting off the gas supply to his wife and children's home, depriving them of their breakfast. According to local media, the court ruled that the man's actions constituted a violation of family obligations and a 'vindictive act' during the divorce proceedings. The couple, both 30, were in the process of divorcing after nine years of marriage. The wife had obtained a court order to evict her husband from the home. During the ongoing case, the husband cancelled the gas subscription registered in his name, leading to a complete cut-off of services in the house. The wife discovered the disconnection one morning while trying to prepare breakfast for her children. She found that the stove was not working and the gas meter had been sealed with wax. She then filed a complaint through her lawyer, claiming that her husband had used the gas subscription for 'revenge' due to divorce disputes. During the trial, the husband denied intentionally cutting off the service, claiming the subscription was cancelled due to unpaid bills. However, he admitted to sending his wife a message saying he closed the subscription 'out of anger'. The court convicted him of 'failing to fulfill his duties under family law' and sentenced him to one month in prison. The court later applied a reduction for 'good behaviour', lowering the sentence to just 18 days. The wife's lawyer, Emre Can Şeker, stated that the ruling sets a legal precedent in family cases, noting that as the couple is still legally married, the husband is legally responsible for providing basic services to the family.
