Medical services reported the death of Turkish opposition figure and cleric Abdullah Gulen on Monday during his treatment.

Abdullah Gulen, who spent years in exile in the USA, was a figure provoking disputes in Turkey, accused by the government of attempting a coup in 2016. He was 83 years old.

"It is sad to report that our founder, poet, and captain of the ship has departed from this life, leading us towards the horizon," the statement published on the official site of Fethullah Gulen, the organization associated with his name, said.

His organization was accused of attempting to overthrow the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the coup attempt in 2016, which led to mass arrests and repressions in the country. Gulen had always denied any involvement in these events, while the government of his country insisted that behind the coup attempt stood Gulen's supporters.
