Turkish Couple Sued for Singing at Wedding

A Turkish couple has become embroiled in an unexpected legal dispute after performing a famous song at their wedding. A video of the performance went viral on social media, garnering millions of views and likes over two years. The incident began in June 2023 when Hasan Başkaya and his bride sang «Ne Bilsin Eller» by artist Gökhan Dede at their wedding reception. Initially, the video received around 1,500 likes on the groom's original account, but other posts accumulated millions of views. Two years later, as the video's popularity grew, the couple was shocked to learn that the artist had filed a formal lawsuit against them. He demanded a settlement of 300,000 Turkish lira for using the song without permission. The groom, a music teacher, stated they made no financial gain from the video. He mentioned that the artist had initially shown appreciation with a clap emoji but later deleted his comment and informed the couple of an impending investigation. «We were surprised by the compensation amount... I've never seen such a sum in my life... All we did was sing a song on our wedding night,» he said. The groom pointed out that the case highlights legal gaps regarding music rights in Turkey. Despite the developments, he clarified that they still admire the artist but refuse to communicate, extending an olive branch by offering to perform the song together in a collaborative music video if the artist drops the lawsuit.
