Turkish prosecutors said on Friday they had issued arrest warrants for 21 people, including 17 referees and the president of a top division football club, whose name was not disclosed, as part of an investigation into alleged match-fixing. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said the detention of the 17 referees was over allegations of abuse of office. The official Anadolu news agency reported that authorities have so far detained 18 of the 21 suspects. The move comes a week after the Turkish Football Federation suspended 149 referees and assistants following an investigation that found some referees officiating in professional local leagues were actually betting on the matches.
